Education of children with the experience of oncological disease and their families is a rarely discussed topic due to the wide spectrum of issues that are attributed to the disease itself. The specialists who work with it represent various fields of science and professional practice. They are doctors, nurses, psychologists, teachers, educators, rehabilitators, therapists, social workers, NGO representatives, etc. These people create educational environments in which children with diagnosed oncological disease adapt to new conditions of life, along with their parents. Children learn to be patients and parents learn the role of parents of a sick child.

It should be stressed that ending the oncological treatment process often does not mean returning to everyday life with the competence that would allow children and their families to return to the so-called “normality”. There is another challenge awaiting them – after-illness adaptation and joining the survivors’ community. These processes are carried out at different times and places and with the help of different specialists using different forms of work ranging from individual conversations, meetings with whole families, workshops, support groups, etcetera. Due to the high diversity of actions directed towards children with the experience of oncological disease and their families, there has been a growing need for an interdisciplinary discussion about the effects these actions have on the  lives of these children and families, with the focus on improving their life quality and also on the practices negatively influencing their adaptation.  In addition, the issues related to the competence of specialists who choose appropriate educational activities for the children and their families are vitally important as well.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the results of the latest theoretical concepts and the research on the factors influencing the improvement of the recovery process and treatment, and thus improving the life quality of the children with the experience of oncological disease and members of their nearest social environment. Equally important is to develop evidence-based recommendations in the form of practical support, which can be realized in different ways and by different subjects: family members, hospital staff, school, peers and local environment. The aforementioned areas form a framework for thematic sections focusing on the following issues:

  1. The child in the family. The process of treatment and recovery: diagnosis, education, therapy and other types of support.
  2. The child in hospital. The process of treatment and recovery: diagnosis, education, therapy and other types of support.
  3. The child at school and among their peers. The process of treatment and recovery: diagnosis, support and working methods.
  4. The child and their family in the local environment. The process of treatment and recovery: education and other sources and types of support.

The proposed framework also refers to issues such as: the functioning of a family as the closest support environment for a child, organizing educational environments, inclusion of children with oncological disease in school and out-of-school environments, strategies for multicultural education of children with disabilities and individual teaching methods, teacher/doctor/other specialists vs child vs parent relation, education through art as the opportunity for emotional development of the child, the role of institutions and NGOs supporting children with oncological disease and their families.
